OXO was founded in 1990 by a man who asked a few very good questions:
Why do ordinary kitchen tools hurt your hands?
Why can't there be wonderfully comfortable tools that are easy to use?
Sam Farber, the man behind OXO Good Grips, was the man asking the questions and the man providing the answers. In his early retirement, he questioned the effectiveness of kitchen gadgets when his wife Betsey's arthritis made it difficult for her to grip ordinary kitchen tools. Seeing an opportunity to create more comfortable kitchen tools for everyone to use, including arthritis sufferers, Sam came out of retirement. He hired a design firm, consulted a gerontologist, consumers, chefs, and retailers, and the result was OXO Good Grips: ergonomic kitchen tools and products based on the concept of Universal Design.

Universal Design.
Universal Design means designing products to be as usable by as many people as possible. OXO creates their Good Grips kitchen products and tea kettles for young and old, male and female, left and right-handed, and for those with special needs. OXO identifies problems and inefficiencies of existing products, not only in terms of comfort, but performance as well. OXO makes their Good Grips kitchen tools with tangible improvements on earlier designs.

Examples of OXO Good Grips success is their famous salad spinner that can be used with one hand; their liquid measuring cups that can be read without bending over; and Good Grip tools with pressure-absorbing, non-slip handles that make them more efficient.
Sam Farber eventually sold OXO and retired a second time. Currently the company is owned by Helen of Troy Limited. OXO International continues to focus on creating innovative solutions with their famous OXO Good Grips products.
